Completed Races/Events

(OYO...stands for On Your Own events.)

Race #1 - January 6...HITS- Naples,FL

Finished...

Highlights: First in Age Group: 13:55:51. Temps were chilly...38 degree air temps for the start of the swim in the Gulf of Mexico. Lots of headwind on the bike, but nice flat course. Bleeding knees on the run (strange story).

RAce #2 - January 12 ... OYO - RichmonD,VA

Finished...

Highlights: Brutal day. Rain, rain and more rain. Soaking wet within the first mile or two of the bike. So a lot of "Singing in the rain..." to keep spirits positive. Had some dehydration and stomach (throwing up) issues at about mile 17 on the run...made for an extra long time out there. Also got a late deluge of rain and wind to add insult to injury.

Race #3 - january ... OYo - Richmond, VA

Finished...

Highlights: It was a cold day...took a while to warm up after I was done (despite a long, hot shower). Definitely feel like I'm building some mental toughness with the weather from these last two races.

RACE #4 - JANUARY 26... OYO - DEATH VALLEY, CA

Finished...

Highlights: Biked from Furnace Creek to Badwater. Beautiful day, surreal desert landscape. Felt very strong at the end of the run.

RACE #5 - JANUARY 31... OYO - MONTEREY/PEBBLE BEACH, CA

Finished...

Highlights: Biking and running along the coast was breathtaking. Even more so was the full "Red Moon" that greeted me on the run.

RACE #6 - FEBRUARY 6... OYO - PALM SPRINGS, CA

Finished...

Highlights: Great day in the desert.

RACE #7 - FEBRUARY 12 ... OYO - PALM SPRINGS, CA

Finished...

Highlights: Unbelievable wind...almost got blown off the road a couple of time. Decided to alter the course on the bike mid-stream to make it a little more manageable.

RACE #8 - FEBRUARY 17 ... OYO - CENTRAL COAST, CA

Finished...

Highlights: Amazing day along the Central Coast. Hard to beat biking and running along PCH. My bike course took me on a climb up to Ragged Point. Breathtaking views!

RACE #9 - FEBRUARY 21 ... OYO - DEATH VALLEY, CA

Finished...

Highlights: Altered the bike and run course from Race #4 in Death Valley. Biked loops from Furnace Creek to Stove Pipe Wells. The run was a 6.5 mile loop out from Stove Pipe Wells.

RACE #10 - MARCH 2 ... OYO - CHARLOTTE, NC

Finished...

Highlights: Can't thank Para Guide enough for coordinating, crewing, supporting and sharing the course with me. My daughter and her bf Shannon came out to cheer me on at the end of the race. Full moon...got to honor the memory of my sister Crandall on the last loop of the run (was her birthday).

RACE #11 - MARCH 9 ... USA ULTRA TRI SINGLE ANVIL - CLERMONT, FL

Finished...

Highlights: Great time with my Anvil Family, despite a sign warning us about the alligators as we entered the beach at Lake Louisa. Steady day. Second male finisher.

RACE #12 - MARCH 15 ... OYO - RICHMOND, VA

Finished...

Highlights: Cold morning for the bike (37 degrees). As the weather warmed throughout the day, the wind picked up. Tougher day than most, but got it done.

RACE #13 - MARCH 23 ... OYO - RICHMOND, VA

Finished...

Highlights: A repeat of #12...cold and breezy. Was a tough day at times...but also felt strong.

RACE #14 - MARCH 27 ... OYO - RICHMOND, VA

Finished...

Highlights: The rain on the bike combined with temps in the low 40's made life miserable for many hours. By the time, my ride was finished, my hands and feet were numb and frozen. Luckily, the rain ended and I was able to bundle up sufficiently for the run.

RACE #15 - MARCH 31 ... HITS FULL - OCALA, FL

Finished...

Highlights: First place in Age Group. Rough swim...kicked in face, veered off-course with foggy goggles, lots of waves, and a chocking/coughing attack mid-swim all in the first of two loops. Settled down and got back into a groove. Great volunteers...had a big smile on my face most of the run!

RACE #16 - APRIL 5 ... OYO - RICHMOND, VA

Finished...

Highlights: My buddy Stephen rode 48 miles with me. He liked being pulled and letting me take the brunt of the wind. My left IT band was pretty sensitive when I was done. Ugh!

RACE #17 - APRIL 13 ... OYO - CHARLOTTE, NC

Finished...

Highlights: Once again the folks at Para Guide were excellent hosts and support. The day warmed up and by the first loop of the run was feeling a bit light-headed and dehydrated. Chugged 32 oz. of Gatorade. Within minutes, was puking said Gatorade. Wiped my mouth, and instructed Gray Riley and Shannon Houlihan, my running partners that it was time go-time. Gray coined the phrase, "Puke & Rally," a throwback from his college days. Each loop on the run (4 total) got progressively better...finished strong. No IT band issue...relieved!

RACE #18 - APRIL 18 ... OYO - RICHMOND, VA

Finished...

Highlights: Smacked my right heel on the pool deck on a flip turn about 3/4 through the swim. OUCH! Was able to keep going. Overall, had a great day. My buddy, Patrick, ran the marathon leg! Was great to have the company and take the focus off my heel. Big purple bruise souvenir for the day!

RACE #19 - APRIL 25 ... OYO - CAMBRIDGE, MD

Finished...

Highlights: Great day on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Beautiful setting along the water. Good pool swim followed by the bike that was part of the Ironman Maryland course. Roads were flat with very little traffic. Run was good. Afterwards, celebrated with some of the members of the local tri club, Cambridge Multi Sport.

RACE #20 - APRIL 29 ... OYO - RICHMOND, VA

Finished...

Highlights: Amazing day with lots of support. NBC 12 came out to film segments of my race throughout the day for a news story to air this week. Had two cheering sections, one for the bike and one for the run. My race times were fast and I felt stronger than I have on any of my races. Solid day and lots of support kept my enthusiasm and energy high.

RACE #21 - MAY 7 - OYO - CENTRAL COAST, CA

Finished...

Highlights: Another beautiful day on the coast. Had a flat on the bike between San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay. Biking and running along the coast was spectacular. Saw a bald eagle soaring overhead...breathtaking.

RACE #22 - MAY 12 - IRONMAN SANTA ROSA, SANTA ROSA, CA

Finished...

Highlights: This was the biggest race I've done this year, about 1,800 participants. Solid day all in all; my fastest race of the year. Run was solid with a strong ending.

RACE #23 - MAY 18 - OYO - PALM SPRINGS, CA

Finished...

Highlights: This was a hot one...temps up to 91 degrees in the blazing desert sun. Struggled on the first part of the run due to the heat, but got better as the sun set and my energy restored.

RACE #24 - MAY 23 - OYO - GRAND CANYON, AZ

Finished...

Highlights: Epic day. Started my swim at the Flagstaff Athletic Club and then biked 75 miles up to Grand Canyon. Bike elevation hit over 8,000 feet with lots of climbing. The run was hot for the first couple hours, and I really struggled with the combo of heat, elevation (over 7,000 ft above sea level), thin air and hills. Was able to regroup and get ramp up on some nutrition and hydration. Last 14 miles of the run were strong.

RACE #25 - MAY 29 - OYO - LAKE TAHOE, CA

Finished...

Highlights: Lots of memories of racing the official Ironman Lake Tahoe in 2013 with this one. It's no longer a race on the Ironman circuit unfortunately. Still too cold to swim in the lake, but got in a good swim at the Incline Village Recreation Center. Biked much of the old Ironman course and repeated sections of Rt. 89 past Tahoe City toward Truckee. Run was along the bike path that parallels the Truckee River. Was rewarded at the end of the run with a spectacular full moon and it's glistening reflection on the lake.

RACE #26 - JUNE 10 - IRONMAN BOULDER, BOULDER, CA

Finished...

Highlights: I returned to the scene of the crime, so to speak. I did the inaugural Ironman Boulder in 2014 and returned for the 5th annual race. In '14, it was hot, approaching 90 degrees on race day. They moved the date from early August to June, in hopes of more moderate temps. That was not the case this year...95 degrees made for a brutal day. Despite fighting some dehydration issues at the end of the bike and on the run, I was able to hold it together to put another one in the books.

RACE #27 - JUNE 15 - OYO - BOULDER, CO

Finished...

Highlights: Special thanks to my friend and fellow-endurance athlete, Debbie Kampman, who set up the course and supported me through this event. It was a bit like going back to the scene of the crime, since I wanted to have another go at it in Boulder after the brutal conditions the week before.

RACE #28 - JUNE 20- OYO - GLACIER NATIONAL PARK, MT

Finished...

Highlights: A beautiful day in one of the most amazing national parks in the country. The Going-To-The-Sun Road was closed on the top half from vehicular traffic, so was able to spend much of the bike and the run car-free!

RACE #29 - JUNE 24 - OYO - LAKE KOOKANUSA, MT

Finished...

Highlights: Cold, cold water in the lake! In the 50's...the day improved as I thawed out. Good bike and a nice run in the NW corner of Montana, at the Canadian border.

RACE #30 - JULY 1 - OYO - TETON NATIONAL PARK/JACKSON, WY

Finished...

Highlights: What a way to cap off the half-way milestone. Amazing day in the Tetons and great support made this one extra special. Swam at Teton Pines and then biked to the Teton National Park. Did a loop past Jenny Lake and back through the park, before heading out. The run included loops that took me by Mormon Road...breathtaking!

Race #31 - July 13 - Oregon Anvil, Lake Hagg, OR

Finished...

Highlights: This was perhaps my hardest race to date. It definitely ranks up there! The lake swim was nice. The bike has over 7,000 feet of climbing...you do loops around the lake and it's all hills - up or down. The temps reached into the low 90s and the radiant heat off the asphalt was about 106. Had major dehydration issues to contend with on the run. Two major puking episodes (early and late in the run) which were brought on by the dehydration. Still managed to finish first for the Badass Single Anvil.

RACE #32 - July 19 - OYO - Jackson/Grand Tetons, WY

Finished...

Highlights: Another beautiful day in Wyoming. The Grand Tetons just never disappoint. Started with a swim at the Teton County Rec Center and then biked out of town on Rt. 89 through the Elk National Refuge and into the Grand Teton National Park. By the time I got on the bike, the temps had gotten pretty hot, about 89, which is warm for this neck of the woods. Slowed down, took in extra fluids and cooled off with ice. All in all, another wonderful day in paradise.

Race #33 - July 24 - OYO - Jackson/Grand Tetons, WY

Finished...

Highlights: This one was very similar to #32. Altered the bike and run course a little to change things up. Was a beautiful day, but a storm moved in and brought some strong winds and rain as I was about 12 miles into my run. Had a very close call with a speeding Sheriff's vehicle while on the bike, but disaster was averted. Also, got to run by a couple of buffalo that were right beside the bike path as I was a couple miles from exiting the Grand Teton National Park. So happy to be here house sitting, getting more opportunities to soak in one of the most beautiful places in the country!

RACE #34 - July 29 - OYO - Jackson/Grand Tetons

Finished...

Highlights: Started my swim in Jackson Lake. A bit chilly but a stunning start to my day. The rest of the day in picture-perfect Jackson/Grand Tetons went off without a hitch. I mixed up my route a bit and enjoyed some different scenery and new, unexplored bike paths. It was a solid day and a good farewell to Jackson...for now.

RACE #35 - August 4 - OYO - Big Sur

Finished...

Highlights: After leaving Jackson, WY, the plan was to go back to Telluride, CO. The weather wasn't cooperating (thunderstorms for days), so a quick re-route was in order. Headed to Mammoth Lakes, CA only to find that the area was socked in with smoke from the Ferguson Fire. Another re-route to the coast. Back to the Swim Center in San Luis Obispo, followed by a bike from SLO to Morro Bay and all the way up the coast to Big Sur. Absolutely stunning day but perhaps the most difficult physically. The bike route included approximately 9,000 feet of climbing. Along with some headwind and heat, it was definitely a grueling effort. From Big Sur, I started my run to Carmel. Lots of hills until I arrived in town to some flatter terrain.

RACE #36 - August 11 - OYO - San Diego

Finished...

Highlights: This was my first ocean swim. Left from Ponto Beach and immediately ran into a stingray (no contact made, but close enough to touch). Turns out that stingray "stings" are at a record high due to the warmer waters. The solo swim in the ocean was a bit unnerving (having just watched a documentary on the making of "Jaws"). Biked up the 101 and to the San Luis Rey Bike Trail. Heat and some humidity started to make it's presence by late afternoon. I was feeling some dehydration setting in early on the run. Fought it off throughout the evening, but was a tough day all-in-all.

RACE #37 - August 19 - OYO - Big Bear, CA

Finished...

Highlights: Swam in Big Bear Lake which was overly saturated with green algae, making visibility virtually non-existent. Exiting the swim, I felt like the Creature from the Black Lagoon! My bike was solid and felt good, including loops around the lake and out to the overlooks to Lucerne Valley (gorgeous vistas to the desert floor). The run was more of a challenge. Started off on a bike path...very hilly and hot. By Mile 21, it took it's toll. Did a "puke & rally" and then was able to finish the remaining 5.2 miles. Long day, but got it done!

Race #38 - September 1 - oyo - Sonoma/mendocino coast, CA

Finished...

Highlights: This was the largest gap I've had between events, due to a planned business trip back East. This one was challenging. The swim was in the Russian River at the mouth of the Pacific Ocean. Ended up swimming much of it upstream to avoid some curious seals that congregate near the beach at Goat Rock. The bike leg followed the coast from Jenner up to Fort Bragg. I was blasted by headwinds much of the way, so I definitely felt everything was in SLOMO all day. Ran along the Mendocino Headlands and through town.

Race #39 - September 6 - OYO - Yosemite, CA

Finished…

Highlights: Yosemite…impressive with it’s grandeur and granite was the venue for #39. A swim in Tenaya Lake was beautiful. Bike down Tioga Pass to Yosemite Village and up to Inspiration Point before returning for more loops near the Village. The run warmed up to 95 degrees in the Valley…a stark contrast from the 37 degrees during the early morning swim. Elevation was substantial. Thin air made for a little tougher breathing…which was made worse by a cold that was lingering. All-in-all a great day none-the-less.

Race #40 - September 11 - OYO - Lake Tahoe, CA

Finished…

Highlights: Great to be back in Tahoe. This time was able to swim in the lake…my favorite! Beautiful, clear water. Biked from King’s Beach through Tahoe City and south to Emerald Bay. Enjoyed a short break with Uber Sherpa Chris and then returned to Tahoe City before heading pass Squaw Valley and Truckee. The remaining loops were on 89 back from Squaw Valley to Tahoe City. Blew the rear tire on my bike with seven miles to go. Ran along the western shore of the lake and then north and through Tahoe City out of town and returned to do loops into the night. Felt strong and so excited to it this milestone - 2/3rds of the way to my goal of 60!

RACe #41 - September 15 - OYO - grand Tetons, WY

Finished…

Highlights: The Grand Tetons just never disappoint. Despite some strong winds late in the day, it was picture perfect. Got to swim in Jackson Lake again and enjoy the scenic bounty that only the Tetons offer. Felt good and soaked it all in.

RACE #42 - September 19 - OYO - Telluride, CO

Finished…

Highlights: The theme of this event was redemption. In June, I had come to Telluride and chose to end my day after the swim and 70 miles on the bike because of the heavy smoke caused by nearby wild fires. It remains the only event that I started and didn’t finish…so it was time to redeem myself. On this round, got the added benefit of enjoying the Gold Season, as the groves of Aspen lit up the mountainsides with streaks of yellow and gold. Ended up having my wheel (and tire) implode which took over an hour and a half to remedy. Was able to finish the course on another bike.

Race #43 - September 23 - OYO - Richmond, VA

Finished…

Highlights: Despite a day of rain, it was an awesome day to finally return home for a race. Enjoyed the opportunity to ride on familiar roads and run in my hood.

Race #44 - September 28 - OYO - Charlotte, NC

Finished…

Highlights: This was an epic day. Completing #44 ties the Guinness World Record held by Ludovic Chorgnon, a French endurance athlete, for most ironman completed in one year. The support I receive in Charlotte is always amazing. So many folks who want to be part of my journey. Special thanks to Para Guide and their team of amazing athletes who joined in for part of the bike or run.
